Shuttered houses in ochre and rose, a bridge crossing at the narrow point, boats tied where cars would be in any other city, and the light dropping in behind the rooflines. Venice is built on more than 100 small islands linked by around 400 bridges, and this is the version of it most visitors remember: not the landmarks, the ordinary street that happens to be water.

What it is like to build

Venice is harder than it looks, and it is worth knowing why before you start. The city is essentially two materials, water and pale stone, and both repeat. Long stretches of this image give you the same three or four tones in the same proportion, so colour alone will not sort it.

The trick is to sort by texture direction rather than by colour. Ripple on water runs horizontally, stonework and shutters run vertically, and the reflections sit between the two. Do that and the canal stops being a grind. This one sits in the middle of our Venice range for difficulty: harder than an autumn scene, well short of a pure canal study.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters on an image like this

Ravensburger have been in Ravensburg since 1883 and still make their puzzles in Germany. In a 1000 piece Ravensburger, no two pieces share the same shape, so a piece that is nearly right will not seat convincingly. On a picture with this much repeated water, that is the difference between an evening you enjoyed and one you spent undoing. The board is thick and laminated with a linen-textured, low-glare finish, so it does not shine under a lamp.

Specifications

Brand

Ravensburger, made in Germany

Pieces

1000

Finished size

70 x 50 cm

Suits

Adults, and confident younger puzzlers

Article code

RB00056-3

A little context

1000 pieces is the size almost the entire adult puzzle market is built around, and it is the size we hold most of. The sky is smooth
with soft pink cloud and almost no edges. The meadow is a large area of one green at one
brightness. For the sky, sort by how pink the blue is and work down from the top edge. For the
meadow, use the stream: it is the only hard line through that region and it gives you something
to build outward from.

The orange foreground is the fastest region in the box and it is worth doing early for
morale. Bracken is high contrast, chaotic and full of individual stems, so almost every piece is
identifiable on its own.

Why the Ravensburger cut matters on a landscape photograph

Made in Germany since 1891. No two pieces share a shape, which is what carries you
through the sky and the meadow once the picture has stopped offering clues. The board is thick
and finished with a linen texture that kills reflections, and on a photograph with this much
smooth graded tone that is the difference between seeing the picture and seeing your lamp.

Specifications

Brand

Ravensburger, made in Germany

Pieces

1000

Finished size

70 x 50 cm

Image type

Photographic, alpine landscape

Series

Nature Edition No. 17

A little context

Mountain photography divides into two kinds and they build completely differently.
