likely this is because there are no small vignettes of action to put together that give you clues as to what goes where; this is just peaceful nature. These more challenging puzzles are a good intellectual interlude amongst the many easier puzzles we do. Very many!
A rock spire catching the first pink light of the morning, with mist still lying along the valley floor underneath it. The Vallee de la Claree in the French Alps, and it is a photograph rather than a painting, which changes how you build it.
Number 17 in Ravensburger's Nature Edition series. The peak is the subject: a jagged tower of rock with snow packed into its gullies, lit warm on its east face while everything below it is still in shadow. To the left, more snow-streaked ridges. Along the valley floor, a band of low cloud sitting on the trees.
Below that, an alpine meadow in strong spring green, with a braided stream winding through it over pale gravel. A single larch leans in from the left in near silhouette. The whole foreground is a bank of rust-orange dead bracken and larch litter, with fallen branches through it, and to the right a scatter of purple violas and pale blue forget-me-nots in the grass.
It sorts into five horizontal bands and they barely overlap. Sky, peak, mist, green meadow, orange foreground. Split the box that way before anything else and you have five much smaller puzzles.
The two hard bands are the sky and the meadow, for opposite reasons. The sky is smooth with soft pink cloud and almost no edges. The meadow is a large area of one green at one brightness. For the sky, sort by how pink the blue is and work down from the top edge. For the meadow, use the stream: it is the only hard line through that region and it gives you something to build outward from.
The orange foreground is the fastest region in the box and it is worth doing early for morale. Bracken is high contrast, chaotic and full of individual stems, so almost every piece is identifiable on its own.
Made in Germany since 1891. No two pieces share a shape, which is what carries you through the sky and the meadow once the picture has stopped offering clues. The board is thick and finished with a linen texture that kills reflections, and on a photograph with this much smooth graded tone that is the difference between seeing the picture and seeing your lamp.

Mountain photography divides into two kinds and they build completely differently. A summit shot is mostly rock and sky, which is a hard, patient puzzle. A valley shot like this one has a foreground, and the foreground is where all the information is. If you have found alpine scenes frustrating before, it was probably a summit. This is the other kind.
