Holdson

Holdson is a New Zealand family firm that has been making jigsaw puzzles in Auckland since 1939, when it cut its first ones out of plywood on a modified sewing machine. In Australia you almost always meet it through one range: Holdson manufactures Wasgij under licence for New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific, which is why the same Wasgij title often appears here as both a Jumbo edition and a Holdson one.

The Holdson edition is the easier of the two to get hold of here and the better value. Its board is thinner and the fit looser than the Jumbo original, which is a drawback if you build on a board and slide finished sections around, and an advantage when you want the puzzle to come apart cleanly at the end. Worth knowing: the Wasgij Retro titles come as 500 piece XL, with physically larger pieces and a full-size adult image. For anyone finding standard pieces hard on the eyes or the hands, that is a far better answer than simply dropping the piece count.
