Clementoni - Across the River Thames Panorama 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The Thames from above at sunset, with Tower Bridge open in the middle and the whole City behind it. A panorama, 98 cm wide and 33 cm tall, which is the right shape for a river and the wrong shape for most tables, so measure first.

What you are looking at

An elevated view looking west along the river. Tower Bridge sits in the centre, its two Gothic towers and high walkway picked out against the water, with its bascules raised and a sailing barge passing through. On the left bank, the glass spike of the Shard and the low modern blocks of More London. On the right, the towers of the City: the wedge of the Walkie-Talkie, the Gherkin behind it, and the Cheesegrater, in a tight cluster.

Below, the river runs the full width in deep blue-grey, carrying two or three small boats and the reflection of the sky. Above, a sunset in dark violet cloud with hot pink and orange breaking through low on the horizon. HMS Belfast and the wharf buildings are visible bottom left.

What it is like to build

The panorama shape is the friendliest thing about it. At roughly fourteen pieces tall, nothing is ever far from a known edge. Build the top and bottom borders first and you have two rails to work between.

Tower Bridge is the anchor, the only pale stone structure and the only thing with strong vertical geometry, sitting dead centre. Then the towers on the right, each a different silhouette. The river and the sky are the two hard bands, both large and smooth. Sort each by tone before placing any of it, and use the bridge to fix where the reflections fall.

A little context

Some subjects are the wrong shape for a standard puzzle and a river is the clearest example. In a 70 x 50 frame this view would be half sky. Panorama is not a novelty here, it is the correct format, and it is also easier than a standard 1000 because nothing is more than about seven pieces from an edge. A note on the box

We hold this title in two Clementoni boxes and the puzzle inside them is identical: the same 1000 pieces, the same 98 x 33 cm panorama, the same print. Both are long boxes. Clementoni reissued the artwork in a slimmer compact version, which is the one photographed here, and a few units of the earlier box are still on the shelf.
