The Amerigo Vespucci under full sail in a heavy sea, painted rather than photographed. She is the Italian Navy's sail training ship, launched in 1931 and still in commission, and she is widely held to be the most beautiful ship afloat.
The ship coming almost straight at you, heeled slightly, driving through a breaking sea. Her hull is the giveaway: black, with two broad white bands running the length of it and gold scrollwork around the bow. Ornate gilded carving at the head, an anchor catted on the bow, and a figure or two visible on the forecastle.
Above, the rig: three masts crowded with square sails on every yard, headsails set on the bowsprit, and a web of standing and running rigging drawn line by line. The Italian tricolour flies from the mainmast head. White water bursts up the bow and sheets off to starboard, and the sky behind is a pale wash of cream, blue-grey and rose.
The hull is the anchor and the only strong dark. Build it first, using the two white bands as guides: they are the hardest, longest lines in the picture.
The sails are the campaign. Two dozen sails, all cream, all catching light from the same side, and at piece scale one sail looks much like another. The way through is the rigging: almost every sail piece has a line or a spar crossing it, and those lines run at consistent angles, so sort by which way the rigging runs rather than by tone. The sky and the sea are the last jobs, both soft, both pale, and both placed by shape as much as by colour.
Italian, High Quality Collection, and the box confirms 50 x 70 cm portrait with a poster included. An Italian publisher printing the Italian Navy's own ship is at least starting from the right reference, and on a picture where fine rigging lines have to survive on to board, print resolution is the whole game.

Tall ships are a small, durable seam in this category with a following that overlaps almost not at all with the landscape buyer. They are also genuinely difficult, because a square rig is the same shape repeated twenty times, which is the classic pattern-repetition problem in a particularly elegant form.
