What you are looking at

At the centre, a sun with a human face in gold leaf, rayed and serene. Around it, a ring of twelve panels, each holding one zodiac sign rendered in gold on deep blue: the ram, the bull, the twins, the crab, the lion, the maiden, the scales, the scorpion, the archer, the goat, the water bearer, the fishes, with their names lettered around the rim in white capitals.

Outside the wheel, the border takes over: monstera and fern leaves, irises, hibiscus and poppies, mushrooms and toadstools, moths and butterflies, a dragonfly, a beetle, a frog, a squirrel with wings, a hummingbird, crystals, a pocket watch, a hot air balloon, an hourglass, a white dove, a crescent moon, an all-seeing eye in a triangle, and on the right a phrenology head with a rose in its hair. Constellation lines and stars are scattered through the dark between them.

What it is like to build

The wheel is geometry and the border is collage, so treat them as separate jobs. Build the wheel first: it is a hard circle with twelve regular segments and a strong gold-on-blue contrast, and the lettering around the rim makes those pieces individually placeable.

Then the border, object by object. Every element is a different colour, scale and subject, so once you are outside the circle it is one of the more forgiving dense images there is. The dark ground between the objects is the only real difficulty, near-black with faint stars, and it goes in last by shape.
