Clementoni - Capri 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A street in Capri looking out to the Faraglioni, painted by Sam Park. Oil-thick colour, an oleander in full flower down the middle, and the sea an almost unreasonable blue.

What you are looking at

A narrow paved street running away from you between shopfronts. On the left, a pink and cream building with a white awning over a shop window, a wrought iron balcony above loaded with plants, and a run of arched openings beyond. On the right, terraces stepping down the hillside with bougainvillea and geraniums spilling over their walls, and cafe tables under blue and white awnings further along.

A large oleander stands in the middle of the picture in full pink flower, its trunk splitting the composition. Beyond it the land drops away to the sea, dotted with white boats, and the two Faraglioni rise out of the water on the right, the limestone stacks that are the island's signature. Pastel houses on the far hillside, and a high blue sky with white cumulus.

What it is like to build

Sam Park paints with a loaded brush, and that changes the method. Edges are made of thick strokes rather than lines, so pieces rarely give you a clean boundary to match. What they do give you is texture direction: the strokes run vertically on walls and foliage, horizontally on the sea and the paving.

Build the sea first. It is the only large area of saturated blue and it has a hard horizon at the top. Then the Faraglioni, then the awnings, which are the only pure white. The oleander and the flowering terraces are the long middle, hundreds of small pink and magenta strokes on green, and the way in is to work outward from the wall or trunk each plant grows against.

A little context

Painted Mediterranean scenes and photographic ones are genuinely different builds, and people have strong preferences. A photograph gives you fine detail and hard edges; a painting like this gives you colour and texture and takes the edges away. Worth knowing which you are buying.
