Caravaggio's Bacchus, painted around 1596 and hanging in the Uffizi in Florence. From Clementoni's Museum Collection, and it is a genuinely different kind of puzzle from anything photographic.
A young man reclining behind a table, bare-shouldered under a loose white sheet knotted at the waist, wearing a heavy wreath of grapevine and blackening ivy in his hair. He holds a shallow glass of red wine in his left hand, offered toward you, and his right hand rests on a dark ribbon at his waist.
In front of him, a bowl of fruit painted with famous and deliberate honesty: a pomegranate split open, pears, apples with bruises and worm holes, black and white grapes, and leaves already going brown at the edges. A glass carafe of wine sits at the lower left, half full, with a visible ring of bubbles on the surface. The background is a plain warm brown. The whole picture is about the fact that none of this will last.
Old master paintings are a distinct discipline and this one is a fair introduction. There are no hard graphic edges anywhere; everything is modelled in tone, so you are matching gradients rather than lines.
Build the white sheet first. It is the largest area of a single value and it has real structure in its folds. Then the fruit bowl, where every item is a different colour and shape, which makes it the most tractable region. Then the wreath and the hair. The plain brown background is the hard part, several hundred pieces of near-uniform warm shadow, and it is the right thing to leave until everything else has closed in around it.
Italian, and the Museum Collection is their fine art line. Colour fidelity is the entire proposition here: a painting reproduced with the wrong warmth is not the painting. An Italian publisher printing an Italian old master is at least starting from the right reference.

Fine art is one of the pillars we go deep on rather than treat as a sideline. A finished old master is one of the few puzzles that genuinely earns a frame, and building one is the closest most people ever come to looking at a painting properly: you end up examining every square centimetre, which is more attention than most gallery visitors give it.
