Clementoni - Christmas Fair 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A village square at night with a carousel turning, a Christmas market around it, and Santa's reindeer already harnessed and waiting in the middle of the crowd. From Clementoni's Classic Christmas Collection, and it is the busiest picture in our Christmas range.

What you are looking at

A snow-covered square under a crescent moon and a starry sky. A lit carousel with horses, striped canopy and gold trim to the right of centre. Beside it a tall Christmas tree strung with lights. Market stalls with red and white striped awnings down both sides, one of them a flower shop with lit windows, another selling wrapped gifts, another with a candy-striped pole. Timber and stone buildings around the square with fairy lights along the eaves, a church tower behind on the right, snow-covered mountains beyond.

In the foreground, Santa in a red coat standing beside his sleigh with a team of reindeer, surrounded by children in winter coats. A snowman to the left, a dog, a woman with a pram, and several dozen more people moving through the square in every direction.

What it is like to build

Do the carousel first. It is the brightest and most structured object in the picture, with a hard circular canopy, gold verticals and a repeating rhythm of horses, and once it is in you have fixed the centre.

Then the buildings, then the crowd, then the snow. The buildings give you straight roof lines that divide the top half. The crowd is the fun part: each figure is a small block of two or three saturated colours against white snow, so they seat quickly and each one shrinks the snow field. Save the snow for last. It is roughly a third of the picture, it is trodden and shadowed rather than flat white, and it goes in by tone.

Why Clementoni

Clementoni are Italian and print with notably vivid, high-saturation colour, which is exactly what a night scene lit by dozens of small warm light sources needs. They sit a step below the German brands on price without feeling like a compromise, and on a picture with this much colour separation the printing is doing more for you than the cut is.

A little context

Christmas market scenes are their own sub-genre and they behave like cartoon crowd puzzles rather than like landscapes: the detail is spread evenly instead of pooling in one place, which makes them far more forgiving than they look at first glance.
