Clementoni - Dusk in Manarola 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Manarola in the Cinque Terre at the exact moment the town lights come on and the sky is still burning. Shot on a long exposure, so the sea has gone smooth and the lights have laid a column of orange across it.

What you are looking at

The village stacked on its cliff in the centre of the frame: four and five storey houses in apricot, rose, cream and ochre, packed on top of one another with no gaps, every window lit warm. A church tower up on the left. Terraced vine slopes climbing the dark headland behind, with the paths and dry stone walls just visible.

Below, the little harbour cut into the rock, boats drawn up on the slip, a stone breakwater of tumbled boulders running out to the right, and the sea beyond in deep blue. The whole town is reflected in the water as a long soft orange smear. Above, a sky of scarlet and salmon cirrus streaked across a deepening blue, with the last gold of the sun on the horizon at the right.

What it is like to build

The town is the easy part and the sky and sea are the work. Every house is a slightly different pastel with lit windows punched through it, so the buildings sort by hue and go in reasonably fast.

The sky is a long gradient with structure. The cirrus runs in near-parallel streaks, so sort those pieces by which way the streak runs as well as by colour, and place from the horizon up. The sea is the hard region: a large smooth field of dark blue with the reflection column down the middle. Split it into three, reflection, near water and far water, and never let those piles mix. The dark headland is the last job and goes in by shape.
