What you are looking at

The lighthouse stands on the headland in the upper right: a white tapered tower with a black lantern gallery and a black band near the top, with the keeper's house beside it, white weatherboard under a red roof, and a smaller red-brown outbuilding behind. A white picket fence runs along the cliff edge. Snow lies over the grass and on every ledge.

Below, the coast: dark grey and brown metamorphic rock in tilted slabs, dusted with snow, with the Atlantic running between them. The water has been shot on a slow shutter so the surf is a soft turquoise-white blur pouring through the channels. Above, the sky runs from deep rose at the top through pink to a pale gold band on the horizon, with a few thin clouds.

What it is like to build

The lighthouse is ten per cent of the picture and it is the only easy part. White tower against pink sky, hard edges, done quickly.

Everything else is rock, water and sky, and each needs a different method. The sky is a smooth vertical gradient, so lay it out in tonal order before placing any of it. The rock is the hard region: dark, low contrast, and the same three browns everywhere, so sort it by whether a piece carries snow, since the snow gives you a hard bright boundary in an otherwise featureless field. The water is the most enjoyable part, because long-exposure surf has direction, and every streak points the way it flowed.
