What you are looking at

The Ponte Vecchio crossing the frame from left to right on its three low stone arches, with the goldsmiths' shops built out over the water: an irregular run of ochre, cream, yellow and green boxes with green shutters and tiled roofs, propped on brackets above the river. The Vasari Corridor runs along the top with its row of small square windows. A second bridge, the Ponte Santa Trinita, crosses further upstream on the right.

Behind the bridge the city climbs in warm terracotta and cream, with the crenellated tower of the Palazzo Vecchio and a church campanile silhouetted against the sun, which sits low and diffuse on the left. The Arno below is glassy green, holding the reflection of the arches. The sky runs from washed gold on the left to pale blue with pink cloud on the right.

What it is like to build

The bridge is the anchor and it is generous. The stone arches are the hardest edges in the picture and the shops above them are a run of distinct colour blocks, so you can build the whole span left to right as one object.

The city behind is the hard part. It is hundreds of small buildings in the same four warm tones, softened by haze, and it gets hazier toward the sun. The way through is exactly that: sort the city pieces by how washed out they are, and place the crisp ones on the right and the faded ones on the left. The water is easier than it looks, because the reflections are directly below the objects that cast them.
