What you are looking at

A street of timber and brick buildings under deep snow, roofs and eaves strung with coloured lights. On the left a shop with lit windows and a sign reading Dry Goods Clothing, figures visible inside. A white church spire in the middle distance and more houses behind it. On the right, a very large decorated fir tree, lit and topped with a gold star, taking up the whole right-hand edge.

What it is like to build

This is a low-contrast puzzle and that is the whole challenge. Snow, pale sky, pale buildings, soft shadows: there are very few hard edges anywhere. It is not difficult in the way a repeating pattern is difficult, it is difficult because the picture never gives you a sharp line to anchor to.

So take the four dark objects first. The horse, the fir tree on the right, the timber framing on the left-hand building, and the church spire. Those are the only strong values in the frame and between them they hold the composition. Then work the lit windows, which are the only saturated colour. The snow and the sky are the long middle, and the way through is to sort by temperature: the snow carries blue shadow, the sky carries gold.
