Burg Eltz in the last light, seen from the cobbled bridge that leads to its gate. Portrait format, and the composition walks you straight in.
The castle stacks up the whole upper two thirds of the frame: eight residential towers of different heights crowded onto a single rock, in pale stone and slate with steep grey conical roofs, half-timbered gables in white and red, oriel windows, and small pennants flying from the spires. It has stood in the same family since the twelfth century and has never been destroyed, which is why it looks like this rather than like a ruin.
In the foreground, a cobbled bridge with low stone parapets runs from the bottom edge of the picture to a dark timber gate arch at the base of the castle. Autumn woodland crowds in on both sides in gold, orange and deep green, with a slope of grass on the right. The sky above is a warm apricot and grey, and the low sun is catching the right-hand towers and the top of the parapet.
The bridge is a perspective line running from the bottom edge into the middle, and it is the best feature in the box. The cobbles narrow as they recede, so a piece can be placed by how large its stones are. Build it first.
Then the roofs. The grey slate cones are the strongest hard shapes against sky, and they fix the towers. The stonework is the hard region, several hundred pieces of the same warm grey, and the way in is light: every wall is either lit gold or in blue shadow, so sort on that before anything else. The autumn woods go in last, and they are more forgiving than they look because the artist has left clear separation between the gold and the green.
Italian, High Quality Collection, made in Italy. On a picture that is mostly one shade of stone separated only by the direction of the light, print quality is what makes the sorting method above possible at all.

Castles split into two kinds as puzzle subjects: the fairy-tale silhouette on a hilltop, and the one you approach on foot. The second makes a much better build, because a path or a bridge in the foreground gives the picture a spine and a landscape does not.
