What you are looking at

Fifteen or more elephants standing shoulder to shoulder along the far side of the water, in a single long line that fills almost the whole width of the frame. Adults facing several directions, trunks up and down, one drinking with its trunk curled into the water, tusks catching the light on two or three of them. A calf tucked in among the legs in the centre right, and a second smaller one on the left. Behind them, a pale featureless sky. In front, a shallow band of water holding a dark broken reflection of the whole line.

What it is like to build

There is no colour, so every normal sorting method is gone. What replaces it is texture and tone, and this photograph has plenty of both.

Sort into four families before you place anything. Pale flat sky. Elephant hide, which is heavily wrinkled and mid-grey. Deep shadow between the animals, which is near-black and smooth. And water, which carries a broken horizontal reflection. Those four cover the whole picture and they look completely different at piece scale.

Build the skyline first. The top edge of the herd is a strong irregular boundary running the full width, and once it is down, sky goes above and hide goes below. The tusks and the light-catching ears are your only landmarks, so place them early. The panorama shape helps throughout: nothing is ever more than seven pieces from an edge.
