What you are looking at

The castle keep stands in the upper middle, brilliant white with grey tiled roofs curving up at every eave, in five stepped tiers. It is known in Japan as the White Heron Castle, and it is one of the very few Japanese castles that survived both the modern era and the war unreconstructed.

In front of it, cherry trees in full bloom fill the top and left of the frame in dense soft pink, with individual branches reaching across the sky. A vermilion arched bridge crosses the moat in the middle distance. On the water, a wooden boat with a boatman in a blue jacket and a conical straw hat standing at the stern with his pole, and passengers sitting under a white canopy. The moat below is still and dark green, holding the whole scene upside down.

What it is like to build

The castle is white and the blossom is pink, and each is the only one of its kind, so the first sort takes ten seconds. Build the keep early: its roof lines are the hardest geometry in the picture and they fix the upper middle.

The blossom is the campaign. Several hundred pieces of soft pink at the same scale with no drawing. The way in is depth: near branches are sharp with visible individual flowers and dark twigs, far blossom is a soft haze. Sort on that before colour. The reflection is the last job and it is easier than it looks, because everything in it sits directly below the thing that cast it.
