What you are looking at

The famous solitary willow growing out of the shallows of Lake Wanaka in New Zealand's South Island, bare-branched and turning bronze, standing well clear of the shore with its own perfect reflection beneath it.

To its left, a stand of Lombardy poplars in full autumn gold along the shoreline, with a shingle beach in the foreground. To the right, the lake opens out, dead calm, holding the sky. Along the horizon, the ranges of the Southern Alps with a long unbroken band of low cloud lying across them at mid height, snow on the tops above it. A deep blue sky with high cirrus.

What it is like to build

The panorama shape changes the whole job and mostly for the better. The border is 98 cm of long straight run and only 33 cm of short ends, and because the picture is only about fourteen pieces tall, every piece is never far from a known edge. Build the top and bottom borders first: they give you two rails to work between.

The tree is the anchor, the only dark object in the middle of the frame. Then the poplars, the only gold. The lake is the hard half. It is a mirror, so it repeats the cloud band and the mountains, and the two halves look almost identical. Split them at the start using the fact that the reflection is very slightly softer, and never let the piles mix.

Panorama is an underrated format and it suits a lot of people better than they expect.
