Clementoni - Lighting Venice 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The Grand Canal at the last minute of dusk, shot on a long exposure so the water has gone to glass. Note the shape: this one is portrait, not landscape, which is unusual and worth knowing before you clear the table.

What you are looking at

A view straight down the Grand Canal from a low vantage point. On the left, a row of Gothic palazzi with pointed arch windows and stone tracery, their ground floors lit warm gold, boats moored along their water doors and red and white striped mooring poles standing in the water. On the right and in the centre distance, the great domed silhouette of Santa Maria della Salute with its smaller companion dome and campanile beside it.

Above, a cloud bank lit pink and salmon from below against a deepening blue, and the last orange of the sun sitting low on the water at the far end of the canal. In the middle of the picture, a single gondolier standing at his oar. Because the exposure was long, the canal is almost perfectly still and reproduces the whole scene upside down: gold lights, pink cloud and all.

What it is like to build

The reflection is not a mirror of the top half and treating it as one will cost you. It is softer, darker and slightly stretched, and it is interrupted by the poles and the gondola. Sort the lower half separately from the upper half from the beginning.

Build the Salute dome first. It is the only large curved silhouette in the frame and it sits on the horizon line, which fixes the middle of a portrait image where you would otherwise have very little to hold on to. Then the palazzo facades on the left, which have strong repeating window geometry. Then the mooring poles, which are the only hard vertical stripes. The sky is the last job, sorted by tone from orange at the waterline up to deep blue at the top.
