Edvard Munch's The Scream, painted in 1893, and one of the two or three most recognised images ever made. From Clementoni's Museum Collection, in portrait format.
The figure on the bridge, hands to the sides of a hairless skull-like head, mouth open, body dissolving into a wavering dark shape. The bridge runs hard on a diagonal from the lower right to the middle left, its rail picked out in ochre and rust, with two upright figures further along it in near-black.
To the left, the fjord in swirling blue-black and teal, with two tiny boats. Above, the sky in long horizontal bands of orange, scarlet, gold and cream, laid on in visible ragged strokes. The whole picture is made of curves except the bridge, and that contrast is the engine of it.
The bridge is the only straight line in the painting, so build it first. It is a hard diagonal running most of the height and it divides the picture into a figure side and a fjord side.
Then the sky, and it is friendlier than it looks. Munch laid the colour on in long horizontal bands, so sky pieces can be assigned to a band by hue: scarlet high, orange mid, cream low. That is a real coordinate system. The fjord is the hard region, dark blue-black swirls with very little tonal variation, and it should be left until the bridge and sky have boxed it in. The figure itself is fifty pieces and takes minutes.
Italian, Museum Collection, box-confirmed 50 x 70 cm portrait with a poster included. On a work whose entire power is its colour, print fidelity is the product: a flat or cool reproduction of that sky is simply a different painting.

Munch made several versions of this image in paint, pastel and print over about twenty years, which is worth knowing if you have seen it somewhere and thought the colours looked different. As a puzzle it is unusually satisfying, because expressionist brushwork gives you direction and texture where a smooth academic painting would give you neither.
