What you are looking at

An aerial taken from high above midtown looking downtown. The Empire State Building stands clear in the left of centre with its setback crown and mast catching the low sun. Beyond it the grid runs away for kilometres, thousands of buildings in warm grey, tan and glass, tightening into the financial district at the horizon where One World Trade Center rises above everything else. The Hudson on the right and the East River on the left, with New Jersey and Brooklyn beyond, and the harbour opening out at the top. A low sun on the right throws long shadows down every avenue and turns every west-facing wall gold.

What it is like to build

The grid is the key and almost nobody uses it. Manhattan's streets run in two fixed directions, so every shadow in this picture falls the same way and every avenue runs the same way. A piece of dense cityscape can therefore be oriented, which is more than a forest or a sea will ever give you.

Build the two rivers first. They are the only large non-city areas and they frame the island. Then the Empire State and One World Trade, the two unmistakable objects. Then work the city in bands: sort by how much detail survives, since the buildings get smaller and hazier toward the horizon. Sharp, high-contrast pieces belong at the bottom of the picture and soft grey ones at the top. That single rule is what makes this finishable.
