What you are looking at

A deep blue polar night sky filled with green and turquoise aurora running in vertical curtains and long horizontal sweeps across the whole width. Below, a steep granite peak in the centre, sharp and snow-streaked, with lower ridges falling away on both sides.

At the foot of it, the village: a scatter of small houses and rorbuer along the shoreline, their windows and street lamps lit warm orange, with a jetty and boats at the right on a dark inlet. The snow between the houses is not white but lilac and rose, because it is being lit by the sodium lamps from below and the aurora from above at the same time. Ice on the water in the foreground.

What it is like to build

The mountain silhouette is the single best feature and it runs the full width. It is a hard boundary between a green-blue half and a pink-orange half, so build it early and the puzzle splits cleanly in two.

Above it, sort the aurora by direction. The curtains hang vertically and the sweeps run horizontally, and that tells you far more than the colour does, since the colour is green almost everywhere. Below it, sort the snow by temperature: rose-pink close to the houses, cold lilac further away. The lit windows are the easiest pieces in the box and each one is a fixed point, so place them all early.
