The rainbow staircase at the Batu Caves outside Kuala Lumpur, with the gold statue of Murugan standing beside it. One of the few genuinely saturated architectural subjects in the whole category, and it is a gift to build.

What you are looking at

On the right, the enormous gilded statue of Lord Murugan, spear in hand, standing at the foot of the limestone hill. Beside it, the 272 steps climbing to the cave mouth, each riser painted a different colour so the whole flight reads as a rainbow running up into the cliff.

Across the left and centre, the temple complex: a tall gopuram tower crowded with painted deities in pink, green, gold and turquoise, and a long colonnade of pillars and arches painted in bands of teal, orange, magenta, yellow and blue, with sculpted figures along the parapet. Behind and above, the grey limestone cliff face with dense green jungle growing out of every ledge, and a bright sky with cumulus.

What it is like to build

Almost everything here is a hard-edged block of saturated colour, which makes it much easier than a photograph of a building has any right to be. The staircase is the best example: every step is a different colour in a known sequence, so a piece of it can be placed by hue alone.

Build the statue first, the only large mass of gold. Then the staircase, working up through the spectrum. Then the colonnade, which is a strong horizontal band of repeating painted pillars. The two hard regions are the cliff and the jungle: grey rock with no pattern, and massed green with no structure. Both are at the top and both go in last, sorted by tone.
