Oia at sunset, shot looking down the cliff so the whole village stacks up in front of you. Note the shape: this one is portrait, not landscape, so measure your board before you start.
Two blue-domed churches in the foreground, one large and one small with an open bell arch beside it, both whitewashed with a cross on top. Behind and above them the village climbs the caldera rim: dozens of cube-shaped cave houses in white, cream, apricot and dusty pink, with flat roofs, blue window frames, terraces and small pools. A single palm tree on the left. A church tower catching the last of the sun high up on the right. The sky runs from hot orange at the horizon through peach to a pale lilac haze over the sea.
Almost everything in this picture is white, and that is the entire difficulty. Hundreds of small rendered cubes, all the same handful of tones, all lit from the same direction.
The domes are your anchors and there are only three of them. Build the two blue domes and the bell tower first, since blue appears nowhere else. Then work the shadow: every house is lit warm on one face and cool on the other, so sort the white pieces by whether they are the sunlit side, the shaded side, or the join. That single distinction turns an impossible field into three workable piles. The sky is a smooth gradient and should be laid out in tonal order before any of it is placed.
Clementoni are Italian, and this is their High Quality Collection, made in Italy. On a picture that is mostly white with tiny tonal steps between one wall and the next, the printing is doing all the work: if those steps flatten out on the board, the sorting method above stops being possible. Priced below the German brands without feeling like a compromise.

Santorini is one of the most photographed places on earth and one of the hardest to puzzle, for exactly the same reason: it is beautiful because it is uniform, and uniform is what makes a jigsaw difficult. If you want the Greek islands but not the fight, a harbour scene with boats in it is the easier way in.
