What you are looking at

Above the water: a low tropical island, coconut palms leaning out over a white sand spit, dense green scrub behind, a turquoise lagoon, and a blue sky with a few fat white cumulus.

Below the water, which is the bottom two thirds: a coral reef in full detail. Branching and plate corals in olive, tan and mauve, sea fans, and fish everywhere, a black and white striped angelfish, a yellow butterflyfish, small orange and blue reef fish in loose shoals, and shafts of light coming down through the surface. The waterline itself runs across the middle as a distinct band where the two worlds meet and the light refracts.

What it is like to build

The waterline is the single most useful feature and it runs the full width, so find it first. It splits the puzzle into two halves that sort completely differently: above is green, white and pale blue; below is turquoise going to teal with warm coral tones.

Above the line, build the palms. They are the only strong dark shapes against sky. Below it, hunt the fish. Each is a small saturated landmark in an otherwise textured field, and every one you place gives you a fixed point. The coral is the long job: sort it by form, branching, plate or fan, rather than by colour, since the colour range is narrow. The open blue water at the top of the underwater half is the hardest region, so leave it.
