What you are looking at

Half a dozen long narrow wooden boats lying at angles across the frame on near-black water, each loaded with goods. Working across them: limes and green vegetables, bunches of orange carrots, watermelons, bananas, coconuts, chillies, mangoes, aubergines, bagged and boxed produce, plastic crates in blue and red, and cooked food in trays. The vendors are visible only from above, mostly as a conical straw hat, a pair of shoulders and two hands, in teal, red and pink shirts. Wooden paddles laid along the gunwales. Green foliage crowding in at the top left and the very top of the frame.

What it is like to build

The boats are the structure and they are strongly directional. Each hull is a long warm-brown band with hard parallel edges running at its own angle across the picture. Build the hulls first and you have a set of rails; every remaining piece then belongs either inside a boat or in the water between them.

Then sort the cargo by colour, because each boat carries a different load and the loads barely overlap: the carrot boat, the melon boat, the greens boat. The water is the hard part, a near-black surface with faint ripple and reflection, and it is the right thing to leave until the boats have closed in around it.
