What you are looking at

The figure stands centre right, tall and gaunt, in an ornate crimson and gold coat with a high collar and heavy embroidered cuffs, one hand extended. Above and behind their head is a large ornamental clock, framed in gold filigree, reading close to midnight. Behind them a cathedral or castle rises in silhouette with lit windows and spires.

In front, a graveyard falling away downhill: crooked headstones, a stone cross, iron railings, and a row of gas lamps lit gold along a path. Small fires or lanterns burn among the graves on the right. Above it all a very large full moon sits in a deep teal sky with cloud drawn across it, and green sparks trail from the figure's hand toward the ground.

What it is like to build

Two light sources, and separating them is the whole method. The moon lights everything cold, teal and silver. The lamps and fires light everything warm, gold and amber. Almost every piece in the picture belongs to one or the other, and sorting on that before you start halves the work.

Build the robe first. It is the only large saturated red and it runs top to bottom through the right of the frame. Then the clock, which is hard-edged and circular. Then the lit windows and the lamps, which are the smallest and easiest objects. The night sky and the dark hillside are the two hard regions, both large and low contrast, and they should be last.
