The Roman Forum at dusk, from the Capitoline end, looking down the whole length of it to the Colosseum. A panorama, 98 cm wide, and the format suits the subject better than any normal shape would.
In the left foreground, the three tall columns of the Temple of Vespasian. Behind them, the baroque dome and campanile of Santi Luca e Martina and the ochre wall of a later building. In the centre, the Arch of Septimius Severus, its heavy attic storey intact. To its right, the six surviving columns of the Temple of Saturn with their entablature still in place, the single most photographed thing in the Forum.
Beyond them the ground opens out into the excavated field: the paved Via Sacra, the brick core of the Basilica Julia, rows of column stumps, and the long line of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina on the left. On the far right, the Colosseum and the Arch of Titus on the horizon. Umbrella pines and cypresses throughout, grass between the ruins, and a sky going from warm gold low down to blue with high cirrus above.
Everything here is the same colour, and that is the difficulty. Travertine, brick, marble and dry grass are all warm cream, ochre and tan, and they cover the whole picture.
Sort by architecture instead. Fluted column drums have strong vertical lines. Brickwork has fine horizontal courses. Carved entablature has deep repeated shadow. Grass has no line at all. Those four families are genuinely distinguishable at piece scale where the colour is not.
Build the standing columns first, since they are the tallest hard verticals and they pin the left and centre. Then the arch. The sky is the only large plain field, and at 33 cm tall there is much less of it than there would be in a normal format, which is exactly why panorama suits this subject.
Italian, High Quality Collection Panorama, made in Italy. An Italian publisher photographing Rome is at least working from the right reference, and on a picture built from a dozen shades of the same stone, fine tonal separation is the whole game.

Some subjects are the wrong shape for a standard puzzle and the Forum is one of them: it is a long shallow valley, and a 70 x 50 frame either crops it or fills half the picture with sky. Panorama is not a novelty here, it is the correct format, and that is worth more than the piece count. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
