Clementoni - Van Gogh: Cafe Terrace at Night (Museum) 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Van Gogh's Cafe Terrace at Night, painted in Arles in September 1888. Portrait format, from Clementoni's Museum Collection, and it is the first painting in which he used a night sky full of stars.

What you are looking at

The terrace fills the left of the picture, blazing yellow-orange under its awning, with round tables and rush-seated chairs set out on the pavement and a waiter in white standing among them. Half a dozen customers sit at the tables, painted as loose dark shapes.

Beyond the terrace, a cobbled street runs away into blue shadow, its stones laid down in short separate strokes of lilac, blue and rose. On the right, dark blue-green buildings with lit windows, and figures walking away up the street. Above, a deep blue sky with large uneven yellow-white stars, and the black mass of a tree pushing in from the right. There is no black paint anywhere in the picture; every dark is a colour.

What it is like to build

Van Gogh's brushwork is directional and that is your main tool. Every area is laid down in parallel strokes: the awning runs one way, the cobbles another, the sky another again. At piece scale that direction is far more informative than the colour, which repeats across the whole picture.

Build the awning first. It is the only large area of saturated yellow and it fixes the left half. Then the star field, since the stars are the only isolated bright objects. Then the building fronts. The cobbled street is the campaign: several hundred pieces of small lilac and blue strokes, and the way through is that the strokes converge with the perspective, so a piece can be placed by how steeply its marks run.

Why Clementoni

Italian, Museum Collection, box-confirmed 50 x 70 cm portrait with a poster included. On a work whose entire power is the relationship between one yellow and one blue, print fidelity is not a refinement, it is the product.
