What you are looking at

A stone building smothered in climbing ivy and wisteria, its whole facade removed so you are looking straight into a furnished room. Inside: a coral-pink armchair, a blue daybed with a ginger cat curled on it, a yellow console table, a crystal chandelier, a gilt-framed painting on the back wall, and shelves of bottles and glassware in an arched alcove on the left. Two tall mirrored doors stand open on the right.

What it is like to build

The building splits the picture into inside and outside and they sort completely differently. Inside is warm, saturated and object-rich: pink, yellow, blue, gold, all unique in the frame. Outside is green, stone and sky.

Build the arched openings and the roof line first. They are the strongest geometry and they define the boundary between your two piles. Then the furniture, then the peacock, which is the only iridescent blue-green. The ivy is the grind, several hundred pieces of the same mid-green leaf at the same scale across the whole top of the picture, and the way in is to work outward from the stonework it grows on rather than inward from the mass.
