Cloudberries - Pantry 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Forty-odd herbs, spices and aromatics drawn flat on a plain blue ground, with nothing else in the picture at all. Cloudberries make modern graphic puzzles rather than pictures, and this is a good example of what that means to build.

What you are looking at

Specimens laid out in loose rows on a mid-blue field, each drawn in flat illustration with no shading: a whole leek, spring onions, garlic, a knob of ginger and a finger of turmeric, a red chilli and a green one, a vanilla pod with its flower, a star anise, cinnamon quills, a cardamom head, a whole onion cut open, olives on the branch, and a lemon wedge.

Between them, herbs drawn stem and leaf: rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley, coriander, bay, dill, oregano, chives, mint and a blue chicory flower. Scattered through the gaps, small marks for black peppercorns, mustard seed, chilli flakes, coriander seed and cracked pepper. The blue background carries a faint woven cross-hatch texture.

What it is like to build

Every specimen is a self-contained object, so the picture is really forty small puzzles scattered across one large blue field. That makes it approachable in short sittings: pick a herb, finish it, set it aside.

The blue is the difficulty and there is a lot of it. Flat, even, and covering perhaps half the board, with only a faint texture. Two things help. First, the cross-hatch has a direction, so pieces can be oriented. Second, almost every background piece touches at least one specimen, so work outward from the objects rather than inward from the middle of the blue. Leave the pure blue for the end and place it by shape.
