Cobble Hill - Back To School 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

What you are looking at

At the centre, a small chalkboard in a wooden frame with BACK TO SCHOOL spelled out in coloured magnetic letters, a red apple resting on it. Nothing repeats and there is no empty space anywhere.

What it is like to build

A collage is the friendliest kind of dense. Every piece carries part of an object with its own colour, typography and edge, so there is no sky, no grass and nowhere to stall. You can genuinely sort by object rather than by region.

Type is your best tool. Pull out every piece with printing on it first and group by typeface and colour: a fragment of red logo or a piece of a book cover is unambiguous in a way that a piece of blue sky never is. The chalkboard in the middle is the single largest block of flat dark colour and it anchors the centre. The only real difficulty is the overlaps, where three objects meet and a piece shows a slice of each, and those go in last.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut rather than a grid: pieces do not sit in rows, the shapes are irregular and no two are alike. On a flat-lay collage where everything is at the same scale and depth, an irregular shape is a genuine extra signal. The board carries a linen print texture and a poster of the finished image is included. One thing worth knowing, a random cut does not count out into tidy rows, so do not audit the box before you start.
