Seven black cats loose among a shelf of 1950s Christmas decorations, drawn in flat mid-century style. Silver tinsel tree, atomic pendant lamps, glass baubles in a branded box and a record player on the floor. This is a design puzzle as much as a Christmas one.
A wall of open shelving against orange geometric wallpaper, holding vintage decorations: glass ornaments in their original box, three angel figurines, a gingerbread house, candy canes in a red boot stocking, a pink candle arrangement, snow globes, a stack of wrapped presents and a pale pink tiered cake. Teal-blue and green atomic pendant lamps hanging on long cords down the right. To the left, a silver tinsel tree with pastel baubles and a starburst topper.
And the cats. One asleep on top of the shelves, one sitting upright between the ornaments, one climbing into the record player cabinet, one stretching down a shelf edge, one on the floor knocking a bauble along, one walking off the right-hand edge and one curled at the base of the tree. Vinyl records and a spilled reel of ribbon on the floorboards.
The cats are the easy part and the wallpaper is the enemy. Every cat is a solid black silhouette, so they are the most findable pieces in the box, but there are only seven of them. Behind everything sits a repeating orange and gold diamond pattern that covers a large share of the picture and looks identical everywhere.
Build the shelf structure first. The horizontal and vertical boards are hard dark lines and they carve the picture into compartments, exactly the way the cutaway of a doll's house would. Then fill compartment by compartment, since each holds a different object in a different colour. Attack the wallpaper last, by pattern phase, matching where a diamond sits within a piece rather than what colour it is.
Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: irregular shapes, no grid, no two alike. On a repeating wallpaper pattern that is precisely the property you need, because a grid cut would give you a hundred interchangeable squares of the same diamond. A poster of the finished image is included in the box. As with all their puzzles, a random cut does not count out neatly, so do not audit the pieces before you begin.

Mid-century design has become a genuine theme in this category rather than a novelty, and it brings in people who buy for the artwork rather than the season. A puzzle that is both a Christmas title and a design print gets two chances to sell, and it is the sort of finished image that stays framed all year.
