Cobble Hill - Colourful Rainbow 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Several hundred small objects photographed from above and arranged into a perfect spectrum, red on the left running all the way round to violet on the right. It looks like chaos and it is in fact rigorously ordered, which is exactly what makes it solvable.

What you are looking at

A flat lay with no background at all. Working left to right: a red telephone, a ladybird, a wooden doll, dice, ribbons, matchboxes and a red car. Then orange, a starfish, cotton reels, a cologne box. Then yellow, tape measures, a rubber duck, pencils, a star. Then green, a car, a frog, a tennis racket, buttons, a die. Then blue, a caravan, butterflies, a bird, sewing thread. Then violet, brooches, framed pictures, a purple bird and a small house. Scattered throughout: postage stamps, playing cards, buttons, badges, keys, dominoes and numbered tokens. Every object is genuinely that colour and nothing has been tinted.

What it is like to build

The spectrum is a coordinate system, so use it. A piece's colour tells you roughly which vertical band of the picture it belongs in, and that is a luxury almost no other 1000 piece offers. Sort into six colour piles and each pile is already located.

Then work object by object within a band. Each item is a small self-contained shape with its own edge and texture, so once you are in the right band the placement is quick. The difficulty is at the transitions, where red becomes orange and blue becomes violet, because those pieces genuinely could sit either side. Leave the boundaries until the middle of each band is solid.

On a flat lay where everything sits at the same scale and depth, shape is a real extra signal on top of colour. Linen print texture.
