Cobble Hill - DoodleTown: 12 Days of Christmas 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A whole town drawn in thin black line and flat colour, with about three hundred small people in it, every one of them doing something specific. DoodleTown is Cobble Hill's own series and it is the closest thing the category has to a where-is-who book you can build.

What you are looking at

A snowed-in town square seen from above, with a decorated tree in the middle and a banner reading 12 Days of Christmas across the top. Santa's sleigh crossing the sky with a long disorderly string of reindeer behind it. A clock tower on the left, a red lighthouse, a bookshop, a grocery, a bakery and a row of shopfronts around the square. A frozen pond at the bottom with skaters and geese, a bandstand with a snowman beside it, ski runs on the hills behind and a bridge across the top right. Everything is white, sky blue, red and green, and nothing in it is drawn twice.

What it is like to build

All that white is the enemy and the line is the friend. Roughly half this image is snow, but almost no piece is pure snow: nearly every one carries a fragment of black outline, a figure, a tree or a roof edge. Sort into has a line on it and does not, and work the first pile hard.

Then build the buildings. Each shopfront is a strongly coloured block with a straight roof line, and the ring of buildings around the square gives you a frame inside the frame. The tree in the centre is the single easiest object. Leave the empty snow of the hillsides for the end, where the shape of the remaining hole does the work.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut, so the pieces are irregular and do not line up in rows. On the blank snow fields that is the difference between solvable and tedious, because shape is carrying the load once colour has given up. Linen print texture on the board. As with all their puzzles, do not try to count the pieces before you start, a random cut will not count out neatly.
