A dirt farm track in early summer, with a white clapboard farmhouse, a red barn, and wildflowers taking over the whole right-hand side. Warm, quiet, and much harder than it looks because of the meadow.
A rutted double-track lane coming toward you down the left of the frame, with a red mailbox on a post beside it. Behind, a two-storey white weatherboard farmhouse with a covered porch, a green tin roof and climbing roses at the corner. To its left a red timber barn with its doors open and a vintage black pickup parked under an open-sided shed, plus a red implement shed and a small grey outbuilding on the right.
A huge shade tree stands in the middle of the yard. Chickens on the track, one brown and one white, three rabbits in the grass, a dog by the porch, and two young deer standing in the long grass at the right beside a split-rail fence. The right half of the foreground is a deep meadow of pink phlox, yellow black-eyed Susans and tall grass. Wooded hills behind under a soft afternoon sky.
Buildings first, obviously, because they are the only straight lines. The white farmhouse and the red barn are the two strongest blocks in the picture and they fix the middle band. Then the track, which is a pale ribbon running through green.
The meadow is where the evening goes. Several hundred pieces of mixed pink, yellow and green at the same scale with no structure. The way in is density rather than colour: the flowers thin out and the grass lengthens as the meadow recedes, so sort by how much green shows between the blooms and place from the fence line forward. The animals are worth hunting early, because each one is a small landmark inside an otherwise featureless region.
Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: irregular shapes, no grid, no two alike. In a meadow where colour has given up, shape is the signal that remains. Linen print texture on the board. A random cut does not count out into tidy rows, so do not audit the box first.

Rural scenes are the largest single theme in the adult category by volume, which means most of what is out there is interchangeable. The test worth applying is whether the picture has a specific quality of light and something actually happening in it. Deer at the fence line and a truck under a shed are the difference between a place and a backdrop.
