A small square in a hill town at the golden hour, painted thick and warm, with nobody in it. The whole picture is stone and low sun, and the fountain in the foreground is where you start.
A stone fountain with a raised basin and a fluted column stands bottom right on a circular paved apron. Around it, buildings in weathered stone and pink render with terracotta pantile roofs, arched doorways and shuttered windows, all of them slightly crooked.
On the left, a broad stone arch opening onto a stepped watercourse running away downhill, with a red bicycle leaning against the parapet, a basket of flowers on the front. In the centre, a cafe under a wisteria-covered pergola with a small table and two chairs outside, a CAFE sign on the wall, and a flight of stone steps climbing between the buildings behind. On the right, another staircase with a red awning and pots of geraniums up every tread. Beyond the rooftops, green hills and a snow-touched mountain under a pale blue sky.
Almost everything here is a warm cream, ochre or terracotta, which is the difficulty. The palette is deliberately narrow and the paint is thick, so hard edges are rare.
Build the architecture in order of hardness. The arch on the left is the strongest single shape. Then the roof lines, which are the only long straight runs. Then the fountain, which is the only object with a circular geometry. Sort the stonework by light: the low sun means every wall is either lit gold or in blue-violet shadow, and that split is far more useful than trying to tell one ochre from another. The flowers and the red bicycle are your only saturated landmarks, so place them early.
Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: irregular shapes, no rows, no two alike. On a picture built almost entirely from one colour family, shape is doing most of the work. Linen print texture, poster included, and a random cut will not count out neatly.

An empty street is a deliberate choice and it changes who the picture is for. A scene with people in it is about them; an empty one is about the place, and it is the sort of image that gets built slowly and then left up. It is also harder, because figures are the easiest thing in any painting to place. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
