What you are looking at

The cabin sits on the far bank in the right of the frame: horizontal logs, a deep porch, a stone chimney with smoke rising from it, and every window glowing warm orange. Behind and around it, dark spruce and birch in full autumn, gold and copper.

What it is like to build

The canoe and the cabin are the anchors and everything else is texture. Build them first: the canoe is the only smooth varnished object in a picture of rough surfaces, and the cabin is the only warm light.

The stones are the campaign. The whole bottom third is several hundred rounded boulders at the same scale in the same three or four muted colours, with no drawing to follow. The way in is light direction: every stone is lit warm from the left and shadowed cool on the right, so sort by which side of a piece is bright. The sky is the reward, because those thick swirls have direction and the brushwork tells you where a piece belongs.
