Four motorcycles parked outside a roadhouse, seen from the saddle of a fifth. The handlebars and mirrors of the bike you are sitting on come into the bottom of the frame, which is what makes the composition work.

What you are looking at

Across the middle, four cruisers nose-in to the kerb: one in purple with orange and yellow flame paint and a chrome springer front end, one in magenta and blue with flames, one in plain black with a studded seat, and a fourth behind. In the foreground, the chrome instrument cluster, twin headlights and handlebars of your own bike.

Behind them, ROWDY'S ROADHOUSE: a yellow clapboard end with a CLUB 66 shield and a WELCOME sign, and a grey timber frontage completely covered in enamel signs, neon and stickers, LIVE MUSIC!, B-B-Q & ALES, BIKERS WELCOME, TOP OIL, ROUND CITY BEER, plus a tattoo parlour sign and a rack of leathers. To the left, an outbuilding reading HIGHWAY ROUGH RIDERS and LEATHER, with a couple in riding gear walking toward it and two more bikes parked beyond. Wooded green hills behind and a bright sky.

What it is like to build

The chrome is the best region and the hardest to describe. Headlights, mirrors, exhausts and engine cases are all reflective, so they carry warped fragments of everything else in the picture. Those pieces look unlike anything else in the box and they go in fast once you recognise the look.

Build the bikes as objects, one at a time, since each has its own paint colour. Then the signage wall, which is dozens of small hard-edged lettered rectangles and is the most placeable part of the picture. The tarmac in the foreground is the only genuinely hard field, a wide band of grey gravel, and it goes in last.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: no grid, irregular shapes, no two the same. On the gravel forecourt that is what remains once colour has given up. Linen print texture, poster included.

A little context

Motorcycles sit alongside classic cars as a category that sells to the enthusiast rather than the puzzler, which makes them a good gift bet: the recipient does not need to already like jigsaws for the picture to land. The chrome is also genuinely interesting to build, which is more than can be said for a lot of vehicle art.
