Cobble Hill - Seashore Sketchbook 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

What you are looking at

Overlapping painted cards and torn-edged studies: a red and white striped lighthouse on a headland, a second lighthouse seen through a polished brass porthole in the lower left, a ship's wheel top right, a red and white beach hut with a stable door, deckchairs on sand, a sailing dinghy with a striped sail, and a rowing boat pulled up on shingle.

Around them, the natural history: a red crab, a lobster, a turquoise octopus, two jellyfish, starfish in orange and blue, a seagull, a sandpiper, a turtle, and scallop and whelk shells caught in a dark fishing net that runs down the left. A compass rose, a coiled rope and an anchor knot. And bottom right, a wooden watercolour box with the pans used and two brushes lying across it. Bottom left, a walrus in a striped sailor's shirt, because why not.

What it is like to build

A collage is the friendliest kind of dense. Every study is a self-contained subject in its own colour, most of them with a hard torn or painted edge, so you can pick one off, finish it, and set it in place.

The cream ground between the cards is the only difficulty, and there is not much of it. The dark fishing net down the left is the second: near-black knotted mesh with shells caught in it, and the shells are the way in. Do the paintbox early, since the grid of coloured pans is the most structured object in the picture.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: no grid, irregular shapes, no two the same. On a flat lay where everything sits at the same depth, shape is a genuine extra signal on top of colour. Linen print texture, poster included, and a random cut does not count out into tidy rows.
