Love this puzzle. Have started will be framing it for my sewing room wall
A sewing room that has been comprehensively taken over by cats, and a wall of fabric bolts arranged in perfect spectrum order behind them. Seven cats and kittens if you count carefully, and the ginger one on the sewing machine has no intention of moving.
Floor-to-ceiling white shelving holding stacked fat quarters and rolled bolts, running through blues, greens, reds and pinks in a continuous gradient. A rack of thread spools down the left. A cream buttoned armchair with two cats asleep on it and a cushion printed with a cat. A black hand-crank sewing machine on the middle shelf and a modern white machine on the right. On the table, a red plaid quilt in progress with pinking shears, a rotary cutter and a green cutting mat. A grey kitten in the yarn basket, a tuxedo kitten sitting on the floorboards with a trail of pink wool it is not sorry about, and a teddy bear in a patchwork bib on the top shelf.
The fabric wall is the whole puzzle and it is genuinely hard. Several hundred pieces of stacked rectangles in graded colour, with no image content to grip. But it is hard in a way you can beat: because the bolts run in spectrum order, a piece's colour tells you roughly which column it belongs to, even when nothing else does. Sort by hue into columns and place them left to right.
Build the cats first anyway. Each animal is a compact zone of tabby brown, ginger or black-and-white, and each one you seat carves a hole out of the fabric wall for you. The white chairs and table legs are the third anchor: pure white against dark floorboards is the easiest edge in the picture.
Cobble Hill are Canadian, based in Victoria, British Columbia, and they cut a random cut rather than a grid. Pieces are not laid out in tidy rows and columns, the shapes are irregular, and no two are alike. On a puzzle that is mostly repeating colour blocks this is a real advantage: shape carries information that colour has stopped giving you. One warning that comes from the brand itself, do not try to count the pieces to check they are all there, because a random cut does not count out neatly. The board has a linen print texture.

Difficulty is a category in its own right, and it is one we deliberately go deep on rather than avoid. Puzzles with large repeating fields, all-one-colour panels or graded spectrums are a different sport from a landscape, and the people who want them want them specifically. Worth noting that the market is unusually narrow at the moment: on our index, only about one title in eight is rising.
