A pair of cardinals on a stone wall that has completely disappeared under roses. The male is the only pure red in the picture and the female is deliberately hard to see, which is the whole idea.

What you are looking at

A dry stone wall running across the bottom of the frame in grey, buff and rust-brown blocks, with fallen pink petals scattered over it. Above and behind, a solid bank of old roses and peonies: shell pink, deep magenta, coral, apricot and pale cream, dozens of blooms deep, with dark green serrated foliage between them.

The male cardinal sits on the left among the pink blooms, scarlet with a black face mask and a crest, facing right. The female stands on the wall in the centre, buff-olive with warm red edging on her crest, wings and tail, looking straight out at you. She is painted so she almost matches the stone, and finding her is the point of the composition.

What it is like to build

The wall is the easy part and it is only a fifth of the picture. Do it first: grey stone against pink flowers is the strongest boundary in the frame, and it gives you a solid baseline.

Then the flowers, and there is a method. Do not sort by colour, because pink is everywhere. Sort by bloom size and edge: the big blowsy full-face roses in the middle distance, the small tight clusters at the top, the flat single blooms at the left, and the pieces that are mostly dark leaf. Those four groups sit in different parts of the picture. The male cardinal is a two-minute job and the female is worth finding early, because she is a fixed point in the middle of the hardest region.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: no grid, irregular shapes, no two the same. On several hundred pieces of massed pink rose, an irregular shape is doing most of the work once colour has stopped being useful. Linen print texture on the board. As always with a random cut, do not try to count the pieces before you start.

A little context

Flowers and gardens is a seam we deliberately go deep on, and within it there are two very different builds: a garden with structure, paths, walls and beds, and a wall of massed bloom like this one. The second kind is significantly harder and is bought by people who want that. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
