Two goldfinches in a summer meadow, painted thick and loose with a palette knife. The birds are the subject and the meadow is the work: it fills the whole frame and there is no sky to speak of.

What you are looking at

One goldfinch in flight in the upper left, wings spread, bright yellow body with black and white barred wings. The second perched on a stem in the centre right, side on, yellow with a black cap and an orange bill.

Around them, the meadow: tall white umbels of Queen Anne's lace, purple and magenta clover heads, pale blue cornflowers and cosmos, and long grass, all painted in short thick strokes. The background dissolves into a deep blue-green haze, so the whole picture is built in three depths: sharp flowers at the front, softer flowers behind, and an unresolved dark wash at the back.

What it is like to build

The two birds are the only yellow in the picture, so they take five minutes. After that it is a genuinely hard puzzle.

The way in is depth, not colour. The painter has separated the meadow into three distinct focal planes, and pieces from each look completely different: crisp white lace heads with visible individual florets at the front, blurred blobs of white in the middle, and a smooth dark blue-green field at the back. Sort into those three before you sort by colour. The dark background is the last job and it goes in almost entirely by shape.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: irregular shapes, no grid, no two the same. On thick impressionist paint, where the image gives you no hard edges at all, shape is carrying nearly the whole load. Linen print texture and a poster is included, which you will want. As always, a random cut will not count out neatly.

A little context

Impressionist and palette-knife painting is one of the hardest styles to puzzle and one of the most rewarding to look at when finished, which is a genuine trade-off rather than a marketing line. If somebody has only ever built photographs, this is a real step up in difficulty at the same piece count.
