A hillside of scarlet Indian paintbrush with the Rockies behind it, painted in blues so saturated the mountains look almost artificial. That colour choice is the whole character of the picture and it is also what makes it buildable.

What you are looking at

The foreground is a rocky alpine slope covered in red Indian paintbrush, dozens of stems with their bracts in scarlet and crimson, growing between pale grey boulders and clumps of green sedge, with a few small yellow and orange flowers among them.

Behind, a line of blue spruce, painted almost cobalt, standing in ones and twos along the ridge. Beyond them, range after range of mountains in graded blue, from mid-blue at the front to a pale lilac-blue at the back, with warm apricot light catching a few of the higher faces. Above, a big cloudy sky in white and pale turquoise. Snow patches in the gullies on the left.

What it is like to build

The palette is doing the sorting for you and it is unusually generous. There are really only four colours in this picture: red, green, blue and white. Almost nothing is ambiguous.

Build the mountains first, by depth. Because the ranges are painted in clearly separated tones, a blue piece can be assigned to a specific ridge just by how pale it is. That is a rare luxury. Then the spruce, the only near-black. Then the flowers, which are the only red. The sky is the hardest region, a broad field of white and pale turquoise cloud with soft edges, and it should be last.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are Canadian and cut a random cut: no grid, irregular shapes, no two the same. In the sky, which is where this puzzle actually gets difficult, shape is what remains once tone has stopped separating things. Linen print texture, poster included, and a random cut does not count out into rows.

A little context

A painter who exaggerates colour is doing a builder a favour, whatever it does to the realism. Photographic mountains are a hundred shades of grey-blue that all look alike at piece scale; painted ones like this are four or five distinct bands you can actually sort. Worth knowing when choosing between a painting and a photograph of the same subject. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026.
