A corner pub in Dublin painted a red you could see from the far end of the street, with a dozen hanging baskets doing their best to cover it up. Photographic, and dense with signage, which changes the order you build it in.

What you are looking at

The pub wraps a corner in Dublin's Temple Bar quarter, and the signage is the picture. The Irish Pub in gold on black runs along both frontages. An establishment date is picked out on the brickwork above. The number 37 sits in green roundels on the fascia. Down the right hand side, The Temple Bar in tall yellow letters. Painted panels advertise fine smoking tobacco always in stock, traditional Irish music, and live music daily, and the Irish for public house runs over the right hand door.

On the footpath: whiskey barrels used as tables, a wooden stool, cast iron street lamps. The frontage carries a wall of small brass plaques, mirrors and framed labels. A cyclist in a green jumper crosses left to right, a woman in an orange top walks a brown boxer along the right, and there are pigeons on the cobbles.

What it is like to build

The red is the trap and the order of operations is everything. Close to a third of this picture is one saturated red, broken only by black lettering and gold outlines. Start there and you will be there all week.

Start with the letters instead. Every piece carrying a fragment of text goes into its own pile, and there are a great many of them. Text fixes position and rotation at once, and the signs are spread right across the frontage, so that one pile alone puts a skeleton across the whole picture.

Then the greenery, then the brick. The hanging baskets and the ivy along the roofline are the only greens in the image. The brickwork above the fascia has a genuine grid to it, with mortar lines you can follow. Leave the flat red panels until last, when the shape of the hole is doing most of the work, and sort them by whether the red is in sun or in shade, because the corner splits the light cleanly.

Why the EuroGraphics build matters

EuroGraphics are Canadian, based in Montreal, and they print on recycled board with vegetable-based inks over a blue-cored board, which is why a EuroGraphics piece has that distinctive edge and holds a firm fit. On a picture with several hundred pieces of one flat colour, a positive click is the only confirmation you are going to get.

A little context

Shopfronts and pub facades are a small, distinctive corner of the category, and the reason they work as puzzles is that they come naturally divided into panels, signs and windows rather than being one continuous scene. The reason they are hard is that shopfronts are painted in single strong colours on purpose. The market for this is not only Irish: on our index of English-language search interest, New Zealand ranks second of 44 major markets and Australia third, both ahead of the United Kingdom. Derived from multiple public data sources across retail, search and community platforms, refreshed 31 August 2026. The rest of this shelf is at Food & Drink.
