Eurographics - Jeep: Rocky Ride 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

What you are looking at

The Jeep in the left of centre, rear three-quarter view, front wheels already in the stream and a full roof rack carrying a red duffel and gear. Around it, a shallow creek running over hundreds of rounded boulders, white water breaking between them and the low sun turning the downstream half of the water to liquid gold.

Behind, a canyon: layered sandstone cliffs in orange and cream on the left, a purple mesa on the right catching the last light, and further ranges receding into lilac. What it is like to build

The Jeep first, obviously. It is the only manufactured object and the only pure red in the frame, with hard panel lines and black tyres. It is also the smallest part of the job.

The creek bed is the campaign. Several hundred rounded stones, all roughly the same size, in grey, tan and brown, with water breaking over them. Colour barely separates them. What does separate them is whether a piece is wet or dry: submerged stones are darker, smoother and carry a gold reflection, dry stones are lighter with a hard shadow. Sort on that first and the field halves.

The cliffs are easier than they look, because sandstone is laid down in horizontal bands and the bands are different colours, so a piece can be placed by which stripe it belongs to. Leave the sky for last and sort it by tone.
