Eurographics - Mediterranean Harbour 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A small Mediterranean harbour at the exact moment the sun goes, with every window in the place already lit. Warm stone in the foreground, cold water in the middle, and a sky doing most of the emotional work.

What you are looking at

On the left, a large stone villa with a pantiled roof, tall chimneys and green shutters, its ground floor a cafe with black and white striped awnings, lanterns lit, and climbing roses and bougainvillea up the wall. Steps down to a stone terrace with a balustrade and cafe tables laid with red cloths. Below that a quay with wooden pilings and three small rowing boats moored, one red, one green, one blue.

Across the water, the harbour arm curves round to a cluster of pastel houses on the far shore with lit windows, and a headland of dark cypress behind. A blue and white fishing boat and a white yacht tied up on the right. Two sailing boats out on the water with their sails up, silhouetted against the sun's path. The sky runs from deep crimson and violet cloud at the top through orange to a pale gold band on the horizon, and the whole thing repeats in the harbour as a long shimmering column.

What it is like to build

Two halves split by the waterline. Above it, hard-edged architecture with strong colour. Below it, a smooth reflective surface with almost no structure.

Build the villa, then the boats, then the far shore. The villa's roof line, shutters and awnings give you the most reliable geometry in the picture. The three rowing boats are the only saturated primary colours. The water is the campaign: sort it by which colour is reflected, warm gold down the centre where the sun's path falls, cool violet at the edges, and place from the horizon down. The sky is the same job in reverse.
