What you are looking at

The castle occupies the centre: white limestone walls, grey conical roofs and spires, a tall square keep, and the deep red brick and stone of the gatehouse at the front with its twin turrets. Balconies, oriels and arched windows all the way up. It was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869 and left unfinished at his death in 1886.

What it is like to build

The castle is the only hard-edged architecture in the frame and it goes in quickly. Build it early: the white walls and grey roofs are unmistakable, and the red gatehouse is the only saturated warm structure.

The autumn woods are the campaign. Several hundred pieces of red, orange and gold at the same scale, and colour alone will not sort them because the same orange appears on both sides of the picture. Sort by depth instead: near foliage is sharp with individual leaves visible, distant foliage is a soft haze. That splits the mass into workable bands. The mountains and sky go in last, sorted by tone.
