What you are looking at

In the foreground, moored working boats: a dark blue fishing boat with a red buoy and black flags on poles, nets and crates aboard, and a smaller open wooden dinghy in cream and pale green tied alongside. Further out, white motor launches and two large sailing yachts with their masts bare, and a big white motor yacht along the quay on the left.

Behind them the village curves round the harbour: four and five storey houses packed shoulder to shoulder in ochre, salmon, cream, terracotta and pale green, with green shutters, awnings over the ground floor restaurants, and a church campanile among them. Above and behind, a steep headland covered in dark green pines and umbrella pines, with a few villas among the trees and a castle roof just visible. What it is like to build

Build the boats first. They are the largest hard-edged objects, they carry the only saturated dark blue in the frame, and they sit across the bottom of the picture where you can work from the border.

Then the houses, sorted by colour. Every building is a different pastel, so a pile sorted by hue is effectively a pile sorted by building. The wooded headland is the hard region, a large mass of near-uniform dark green with very little internal detail, and it should be left until the roof line below it is complete. The rippled water is easier than it looks, since the ripples run in consistent directions.
