What you are looking at

The cabin sits on a small point in the middle distance: red-brown logs, a deep porch with two Adirondack chairs, a green tin roof, a stone chimney with smoke coming out of it, and a stack of split firewood under the eaves. A timber jetty runs out from it to the right with two Jack Russells on it and a yellow canoe tied alongside.

Around it, conifers: dark spruce, and larches and maples turning scarlet and copper on the right. Behind, a snow-capped peak. In the foreground, a man in a dark jacket casting from the bank, a rainbow trout leaping clear of the water to his left, ducks on the surface, a red canoe drawn up on the shore and a second one out on the water with two people in it. Bald eagles circling. The sky is banded pink, gold and lilac, and the lake holds all of it upside down. A band of wildflowers in red, yellow and white across the very bottom.

What it is like to build

Build the cabin and the jetty first. They are the only man-made structures and the only hard straight lines in a picture otherwise made entirely of organic shapes.

Then the canoes, which are the only saturated red and yellow. The reflection is the trap: the bottom third repeats the top, in the same colours, slightly softer and broken by ripples. Split those two piles at the start. The conifers are the long job, dense near-black green with almost no internal variation, and they are the right thing to leave until the frame has closed in around them.
