Eurographics - The Love & Hope VW Bus 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

What you are looking at

The Samba in turquoise and white, three-quarter front view, chrome VW roundel on the nose, the full row of roof skylights that makes a Samba a Samba, and a whitewall tyre and spare mounted at the front. Painted daisies and flowers in pink, yellow and blue across the panels, a peace symbol on the side, and LOVE and HOPE lettered above the headlights.

Around it: a young woman sitting cross-legged in the sand playing an acoustic guitar, a suitcase covered in travel stickers, a tambourine and a straw hat beside her. On the right, a second figure sitting on a blanket by a cool box, a pair of bongo drums, and a yellow SURFERS ONLY road sign. Beyond, a wide beach with surfers carrying boards to the water, two sailing dinghies with striped sails, a group walking the tideline, and gulls in a pale gold sky.

What it is like to build

The bus is a gift and everything else is not. It is the only hard-edged, saturated, high-contrast object in the picture, and it occupies the middle third. Build it first, panel by panel, using the chrome trim lines as your guides.

Then the difficulty becomes clear. The sky, the sea and the sand are all pale, smooth and low contrast, and together they are more than half the image. There is no drawing to follow. Sort them into three families by tone and work down from the top edge: sky is coolest and lightest at the horizon, sea carries a faint blue-grey band, sand is warmest. The figures and the sailing boats are your only landmarks out there, so place them as soon as you find them.
